Penny match dispensers appeared around the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. They faded away in the late 1960's as the cost of the matches was more than a penny. Dispensed matches were common place. For example in the 50's you would place two dimes in a cigarette machine, get a pack of cigarettes, a book of matches and two pennies change.
These old relics of history are getting harder to find as they were usually just tossed out and forgotten. This machine shows it's age and some wear & tear. The wood grain overlay is lifting in several places and a small section is missing on the left side. The white on left side near the top and at the base looks like the black finish was scuffed. The key does not look to be the original but it does work.
